When the Phoenix Cries

In this world of magic and adventure, the people people live in fear of a master of darkness called Lacuna. All the world threatens to be consumed by their evil armies, the light of good being extinguished forever. The world's final hope is a band of intrepid adventurers, who must gather the courage and strength to face Lacuna and save the world. If they believe in themselves and in each other, surely they will triumph, defeating Lacuna and bringing about a new age of peace.

Yes, it truly would be convenient if the world was such a simple place, wouldn't it?

Thirty years later, the new generation has inherited an peaceful world following Lacuna's destruction. However, the future is still fated to bring tragedy and ruin. No matter what happens, the long-awaited "happily ever after" will never come. Those who you love will die, and all you will be able to do is watch the horrible ending unfold. You cannot change what has already been written. This is a story that will never have a happy ending, and no matter how hard you struggle against it, that will never be overturned. Pieces on the board may seem to have the ability to change its outcome, but they dance at the whims of the players, and the one you're challenging made this game to be absolutely impossible to win.

If you wish to play a game that can be won, turn away. If you are the greatest kind of fool, a player who will challenge me despite being told that there's absolutely nothing to be gained by doing so, I welcome you to my table. This game will take place upon a world that can never be saved, with an ending that can never be changed, where heroes exist only to fall and be consumed by the cruelty of fate. I'll accept your challenge, and we'll see how long it takes for you to give in to despair.

What's This

When the Phoenix Cries is a fantasy action campaign inspired by the When They Cry game series. It will be run in Valor, and won't look much like Higurashi or Umineko - no murder mystery premise, no small closed setting. However, there will be time loop mechanics, and metatextual elements that examine the nature of the genre. I'm refraining from saying much about it, because discovering the rules of the world is part of the fun of any When They Cry game board.

The game will be in Valor, running through eight episodes over 20 levels. The players will construct two parties - the Old Generation who challenged Lacuna, and the New Generation who live in the wake of their deeds. The New Generation characters will be either descended from or at least closely affiliated with the Old Generation characters, and the actions in the old world will have consequences in the new one, 30 years later.

Setting Info
Over here!

On the subject of magi: You can be one, but don't have to be one! If your backstory doesn't leave you as one of those privileged enough to inherit an AG, there's always AG theft and the black market. If you aren't a mage, just think of it like Devil Fruit in One Piece - those who have one are terrifying forces of nature, but Zoro and Sanji can still kick plenty of ass without them.

Interested?
Awesome! The game will be starting after Kingdom Valor ends, so... Summer-Fall 2021? Thereabouts. Probably. Lorica will definitely be over.

Reply here with:
- Your name! And a plurk or discord contact, I probably know who you are, whatever.
- What days of the week would work best for you! And what times.
- Some sort of vague character concept, if you have any! Note that playing someone in the new generation connected to your own character in the old generation is discouraged, so once the party is determined you can get to properly tying your young characters to each other's old ones.
- Higurashi, Umineko, Ciconia, or Naruto?

YES I AM EXTREMELY INTERESTED, and back on my bullshit once again

Ruka play someone normal for once:

Old Generation - Intrepid adventurer-archaeologist who lost an arm in a terrible accident and promptly replaced it with some sick weaponry instead. Nonbinary, more courage than sense, dumb in the way someone incredibly intelligent can be dumb.

New Generation - Nephew/niece/etc of aforementioned archeologist. A relentless, restless tinkerer who strives for self-improvement. May have fantasy automail if the setting allows it or much less advanced fantasy prosthetics if the setting does not allow the automail thing.

Are you back on your bullshit again:

Old Generation - A cursed armor made or influenced by Lacuna's forces. A mindless guardian of a formerly sacred place who was violently forced into self-awareness when it was either destroyed and seen as unsalvageable, or purified. Bitter, secretly seeking repentance deep down, and not entirely sure what he's doing here, actually.

New Generation - Somewhat-feral child left an orphan after Lacuna's forces devastated their hometown. Picked up by aforementioned old generation armor and raised with a better-than-you'd-think less-than-you'd-hope degree of competency. Has a knack for necromancy and absolutely none of the cultural norms really required to think that necromancy is bad so their backpack is fulla skeletons at all times.

-Availability as things stand right now, weeknights (excluding Tuesdays for Meteor) after 9 PM EST works best for me, could possibly do as early as 7 PM EST, but might miss a session or two every few weeks. Weekends too unpredictable.
-Character... Get back to ya on that one!
-I only know Higurashi

yessssssssssssssssssssssss let's go let's go

there absolutely has to be magitek that the later generation doesn't quite understand, by the way

ETA:

ASSUMING that I can do this in my doubtlessly copious free time my best day for this is probably Sunday, followed by Friday. Any time after 2 PM PST. I may need to arrange this on alternate weeks.

Plurk is [plurk.com profile] therealbliss, discord Talia "Elli" B#4698.

Young gen, thinking a Yuna type: a healer and holy woman who's been training her whole life to seal away Lacuna with her blood. Next gen, a scrounger and tinker of lost magitek that he cannot understand and can barely operate, trying to reignite a sense of scientific rigor.

I'm still very down for this.

-Evenings work best for me, but I can probably swing any time after 3:00 PM EST, and can do any day except Monday and Saturday.
-Old Generation: one of the many, many, many children of the king of Hirac, a child prodigy with immense magical skill.
New Generation: a wandering swordswoman from Quaenwan who lives for battle... especially with a certain someone, her rival-lover-enemy that she returns to clash against time and time again. The interest is mutual. Their dates involve a lot of dueling.
-All four, but Umineko is my favorite.

Holy crap I'm in for this.

EDIT:
Name: Kaja ([plurk.com profile] kajarainbow)
I should be fine any day of the week except Wednesday and Saturday by then. Possibly One Piece Marines Valor will take up another day if it returns, but don't know the specifics of that. Will update when I find out what day my magical girl game is on, too. Time availability is the usual, anytime before 8 EST.

Okay, old generation concept: feral child who got weird abilities from nomming a bunch of monsters, but also has the spirits of those monsters fighting her and each other over control of her body (malevolent entity build). Also, her abilities change in unpredictable ways, so that she routinely gains and loses abilities.

Oh, and I'm torn between Umineko and Ciconia.

ABSOLUTELY STILL DOWN FOR THIS

NAME: Emily
AVAILABILITY: In Summer/Fall 2021? Hrm.
Mondays before GV (assuming GV is still going, otherwise free)
Thursdays
Fridays during KV slot
Saturday AM/afternoon (before 6 ET)
Maybe Sundays during SWV slot if SWV is over
CONCEPTS: Okay so I have... three... ideas, depending on party makeup
OLD GENERATION
1. Princess from the Kingdom of Quaenwan, pressured into going along with the party as some sort of overseer despite little magic power or genuine war skill by other royals and the mages of her kingdom. Grappling with the weight of her station and how little power it gives her, personally. Playwise, clever tactics, maybe some alchemical solutions or similar things. Will likely lead a social revolution during the timeskip.
2. Haughty mage from the Kingdom of Hirac, who genuinely believes magic is everything. A genius researcher with magic power to back it up, but ALSO has a kind of noblesse oblige view of it, believing magic power gives you (social and actual) power but you then have an obligation to use it for the people. Playwise, pure caster. Will likely help develop the Aetheric Engine during the timeskip.
3. A mage-hunter from the Kingdom of Raemeth with a personal vendetta against mages and magic. Why? I don't know yet we can plot that out if it comes up. Playwise, some sort of skirmisher/duelist, prolly.
NEW GENERATION
idk I'll get back to these, just know that they'd be a lot different than the old generation ones
Higurashi, Umineko, Ciconia, or Naruto? when the sea cats cry

- Nerdie! [plurk.com profile] nerdiethings, usual shit.
- Weekdays any time! Barring Wednesday from 12 to 5 MST. Weekends are way too busy, alas.

Old Generation - Big Jerk Bully Knight/Magi here to Uphold The Status Quo. Probably using a fake name full of bravado like Gallant the Valiant.

New Generation - ordinary worker?/cook?/person from Raemeth who's spent their life just trying to keep their head down. Has been secretly hoping to acquire an Engine for themselves and escape to a life of freedom from the military police.

- Umineko living always

This is Doom ([plurk.com profile] TheDoomkitten) and I am extremely interested in this, holy smokes. I'll be available every day from after 8 PM EST until whenever ungodly hour at the very least, and my schedule will be flexible enough to play in the session at any time on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. As far as potential character concepts go:

Old Generation: A gruff Raemethian Mage Hunter knight who, after being cast out of her guild and Raemeth, was hired by a Hirac noble family to take out their primary competition. Unbeknownst to any of them, the other family also hired a renegade Mage Hunter, and she came back from an assignment just in time to stop the renegade from killing the only daughter of the family... while the rest weren't so lucky. With the only heir to the family surviving the assassination attempt soon becoming public knowledge, she fled with the girl to keep her safe from the many plots to kill or use her.

New Generation: An apprentice blacksmith who lost her eye in an accident. A kindly stranger replaced it with a state-of-the-art miniature Aetheric Engine in exchange for her paying back her debt by hunting monsters and doing the stranger's errands, using the new magic granted by the engine (weapon creation in short) to aid her in her tasks. Bubbly, kind, also moderately bummed and freaked out by her current situation but there's not much she can do about it so she's rolling with the punches.

- Hi yes it's Sven. [plurk.com profile] svensationalism and all.
- All of my tabletop obligations should be wrapped up by the time this would start barring a bi-weekly game on Mondays and a bi-weekly game on Sundays. If anything else conflicts I'll let you know closer to game time.

Old Generation: A Mage Hunter, an expatriate soldier from Hirac. Might have had magic at one point but certainly doesn't anymore. Has possibly been emboldened by alchemical experiments in order to take down more powerful magi. Basically a Witcher.

New Generation: A scion of a noble house from Quaenwan, wielding an Aetherical Engine blade. Little to no access to magic natively, but is covered in mysterious indecipherable rune tattoos despite having no ability to activate them themselves. Reverse Amnesiac/Cloud Strife type: I flesh out this backstory with someone (either you or someone in the plotting clique who doesn't get into the game) and you/they figure out how much of my story is true behind my back.

- Higurashi ranks just slightly above Umineko for me, but it's close.

I'm interested! Don't really have any character ideas yet, though.

Days: Tuesdays or Wednesdays are best for me for evenings. I can do Sunday afternoons if it's over by 5:30 Central time. I'm free all day on Mondays.

Out of those choices, definitely Ciconia but I'm familiar with all of them.
