PROJECT LORICA

The Missing Year
2130 AD. Six university students are living in the bustling city of Grand Island, Maine. One day, they looked up to see a bizarre phenomenon above, with mysterious ripples spreading across the backdrop of the sky itself. Then, everything went black.

When they awoke, it wasn't to the same world that they left behind. As they were filled in over the passing days, a whole year had passed since that day, and humanity was now fighting a war against an alien force known as The Symphony. With barely enough time to understand what had happened to them, they learned that they had been chosen to pilot machines that now stand as humanity's last line of defense.

Project Lorica is a mecha action campaign in an original setting, drawing inspiration from Pacific Rim, Darling in the FRANXX, RahXephon and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Characters will pilot mechs in pairs to face an alien menace beyond human understanding, while piecing together a plot both complex and massive in scope as the setting slowly unfurls around them.

The Symphony
An alien species that began to attack humanity, with the apparent goal of the erradication of our species. The first of their forces appeared suddenly and without warning, and all attempts to communicate or reason with them failed. Their strange powers are far beyond human understanding, and the almost none our technology is capable of harming them. It is this unknown enemy that you are tasked with destroying.

There are two known types of entities within the Symphony. The first is the Choir, or Voices individually - these are smaller, less powerful, and can sometimes even be destroyed via ordinary means. However, their numbers are immense, forcing most battles against them to be at an extreme disadvantage in terms of numbers. The second is the Conductors - incredibly dangerous and massive entities that seem to exist outside of most conventional laws of physics. The Choir increases in frequency and intensity of attacks before one appears, and their abilities vary wildly, from terrifying weaponry to powers beyond our ability to comprehend. If at all possible, avoid engaging a Conductor until we've been able to figure out what it can do.

The Lorica Project
The Symphony possess a power far beyond human limitations, but Project Lorica has granted us a weapon capable of fighting back against them. A Lorica Unit is a humanoid combat unit, about 30 meters in height, which requires two pilots to operate. Their power is drawn not from a built-in power source, nor from the pilots, but from the space between the pilots. The stronger their relationship, regardless of its nature, the more powerful the Lorica Unit becomes.

Each Lorica Unit is identical in its unpowered state, but is capable of anything, depending on its pilots. When activated, its form and capabilities change based on the personalities and relationship of its pilots. One pilot acts as the Lead pilot, inducing the physical shape of the Lorica Unit and enduring the psychic feedback of attacks made against it. The other acts as the Support pilot, providing additional weaponry for it and enhancing the abilities of the Lead. If the Lead's psychic hold on the Lorica becomes too unstable, the two can switch positions, giving the Lead time to recover while the Support takes point. Regardless of positions, the Lorica Unit's movements are controlled by a combination of the wills of both pilots.

The technology behind Project Lorica is understood only by a select few, but we know the following about these machines:
  • A Lorica Unit cannot operate without two pilots.
  • If the pilots are total strangers, the Lorica Unit will not move.
  • Performance seems to vary both based on the relationship between the pilots and the identities of the individual pilots.
  • When a Lorica Unit is active, any of the Symphony attacking the city will change priorities and move to attack it instead.
  • It is highly dangerous to allow either pilot to lose consciousness.
  • It is highly dangerous to pilot a Lorica Unit continuously for longer than one hour.
  • There has been one incident of a scout encountering a feral Lorica Unit in the wild.

Rules
This will be, as usual, a Valor game, but with some very special rules. Instead of fighting alone, you'll be piloting Lorica Units in pairs - and the closer your bonds become, so do your mecha become more powerful. The full extra rules can be found here.

Signups Open
As of now, I'm opening signups for this, but won't be choosing a final party for some time. I'm hoping to get six players - all skill levels are welcome. Expected start time is late 2019 or early 2020. If you're interested:

  1. What's your name and plurk?
  2. What times during the week are most consistently free for you?
  3. Do you have any questions about the setting that I might be able to answer without spoiling something?
  4. Do you have any concepts for characters?

Characters will, initially, be ordinary college students. The important points of consideration are:
  • What kind of person are they?
  • Is there anything unusual about how they connect to others?
  • How might they be connected to other pilots?
  • What kind of strong memories tie them to the past?
  • Why would they accept a dangerous role as part of humanity's last line of defense?
  • What kind of weapons or abilities does their psyche grant to a Lorica Unit?

consider my interest GAUGED (this is Raven)

anyway I would definitely play a punk-ass rowdy girl with trust issues due to a shitty family and possibly some time spent homeless. She could be the most Difficult member of the team in terms of connections to others, possibly only able to copilot with one person at first because they're rivals or something?

She makes the robot Shin Getter a really mobile, edgy-looking assault type with bat or dragonlike wings and a big scythe or two.

availability: Saturdays after six EST, Tuesday-Thursday after ten, Fridays at I'd Figure Something Out O'Clock

if you need more information I'll provide later I'm just in a hurry at work

Hi this is Gray and I am definitely interested. No real character concepts yet, thinking of possibly doing an expy of one of my other OCs into this setting. Also the synchronization level-up rules seem to imply that everyone levels up at the same time? So there won't be mid-session level ups?

I have some ideas...

- Japanese illustration major hoping to break into the comics business because they love American superheroes. The reverse of That Guy who moved to japan because they like manga and anime. Excitable nerd who is just THRILLED at the chance to save the world from aliens. Str/Spr/Guts dramatic punch explosion build. Shouts catchphrases
- A bitter retail employee who got caught up in this having a one night stand with someone at a party at the university (maybe one of the other PCs?). The don't want to be here but part of them is full of vitriolic rage at the entire universe and THAT part of them is ecstatic at having an army of unstoppable supermonsters to vent their frustrations on. Agi/Guts crisis berserker build. Lives on nerves and coffee
- Since this is the 22nd century: An AI that has always wanted a body with which to experience the world like humans do rather than just through cameras and shit. Str/Mnd technical fighter. Because HAVII died too early.
- Poli-Sci major/sign toting activist. I dunno what the major hot button issues are in the year 2130 but they have opinions on all of them and want to be President some day. Mnd/Spr support/artillery build. Pro Teamwork. Cares a lot and doesn't pretend not to.

Okay some specifics now that we're closer to game time.

- Eric/[plurk.com profile] overbringer
- Wednesdays are FFAV obviously. Other than that, Tuesday would be the best, Sat would be probably fine as long as we start after 4PST at the VERY earliest. Friday will eventually be Kingdom Valor. Sun/Mon/Thursdays would be unideal but could be made to work if necessary.

In general, the later the start time the better for me.
- It's the 22nd century so obviously the world is gonna look a bit different. Can you give me some kinda snapshot on what the future looks like? Do we have flying cars? Are AIs around? Is there a Mars colony? Did the singularity happens? What is up?
- CHARACTER: I'm leaning towards the character who acts cheery and optimistic and aggressively normal to hide something very fucked up going on in his head. I'm not sure what the fucked up thing is but I have some potential choices: He underwent some kind of horrifying and bizarre trauma as a child. He has a mental connection to the Symphony for Some Reason™. He's getting memories from the future that show visions of doom. WHATEVER it is, he's going to pretend that Everything Is Fine and keep smiling right up to the moment where he snaps and goes berserk.

Build Spr/Int support artillery. The phrase "Support Berserker" keeps floating through my head. Probably taking Berserker or Malevolent Entity because if you're going into this plan and you're NOT planning on having a mental breakdown at some point then what the fuck is even the POINT?

Consider my interest piqued! I'm not yet sure how/what kind of character I'll make, but I definitely have some half-formed ideas burbling under the surface. I'm not sure if I want to go all in on the drama or not juuust yet.

Oh right this is Sven btw

OKAY after some prodding, let's get some ducks in order.

1. Sven / [plurk.com profile] svensational
2. Mondays are probably no-go for the forseeable future, Tuesdays and Sundays will be dicey assuming podcast gets back on track. Saturdays will be free after University Excalibur. Due to current job/third shift situation I expect to have to be done by somewhere in the 11 PM/Midnight range, EST if we run on Tues/Weds/Thurs/Fri. I'll let you know if that changes at any point closer to run time.
3. I may have some questions but I'd wanna poke you in private.
4. Sven Finally Plays A Villain Protagonist, No, Seriously, This Time. Project Lorica is pushing more dangerous facets of their more subdued personality to the fore. Probably thinks fighting against the Symphony is great because the greatest darkness is what pushes Humanity beyond their limits. Somewhere between some of the crazier version of Hayato Jin from Getter and Komaeda from Danganronpa. Build could be flexible depending on party needs, I haven't committed to anything yet.

1- Luci! [plurk.com profile] windykitsune
2- Right now my availability is weeknights, preferably ending by 12 AM EST. As I work retail, things will change during November and December, but I should have very advance warning of any sessions I may have to miss
3- Do pilots themselves have special abilities?
4- I don't have any ideas at the moment, but I will... I will

1. What's your name and plurk? Matt | [plurk.com profile] atrypical
2. What times during the week are most consistently free for you? Evenings (Eastern US time), and Mondays/Tuesdays/Fridays/Saturdays tend to be the most consistent, but depending on time it might be doable otherwise.
3. Do you have any questions about the setting that I might be able to answer without spoiling something? I think I get the general idea. I've never done a Valor game before so I might need some mechanics handholdling, but.
4. Do you have any concepts for characters? Stoic male medical student or extremely punchy female theater student depending on what the party needs.

1: Kaja [plurk.com profile] kajarainbow
2: My availability is Sunday ending before my 8 pm EST game and all weeknights except Thursday ending by 11 pm EST. Saturdays are non-ideal as that's when I spend time with family, but if the game starts at 7 or 8 pm, that should be manageable (though the 11 pm time limit still applies).
3: Are sophisticated body mods a thing 130 years in the future?
4: Transhumanist goth weirdo who has a fursona. Transgender, into body mods, biotech major.

fiiiiIIIINE

1. Emily here! [plurk.com profile] deerleisure
2. Presumably a bunch of my games will be over by the time this comes around? So I'll be assuming;
Mondays 6-9 ET (If you wanna run before GV), Tuesdays possibly free after 6, Thursdays after 6 ending by 10, Friday 6PM+ if KV is over, Saturdays in the early afternoon (replacing Excalibur, or any point up until 6 PM), or Sundays after JoJo's.
3. I don't think so
4. OKAY SO MY INITIAL CONCEPT. A girl who was built up as an unparalleled genius who cracked and broke under the pressure - possibly not necessarily books, maybe another type of prodigy, but the same gist applies. She considers herself a failure, but also holds others up to unreasonably high standards because that's what she's used to from people around her.
Alternatively, if too many others are the prickly type, than she could be clingy and oversharing, but with the same backstory.
Either way I want her to have a sick facial scar because Makoto didn't get enough runtime for me to get my fun out of that.

- Saturdays and Sundays are best for me, I've got games on Saturdays at 9 am PST and 4 pm PST but you run one of those games so those won't overlap anyway. Thursdays after 1 PM and tuesdays after 5 PM are also good for me.
- no questions right now
- i know i want to play an immobile sniper build, just go all in on the 'delete enemies with super ranged moves'. so my initial thought is a gifted young girl who skipped a couple grades to get there who is a Super Perfectionist and has 0 self-confidence. she believes anything less than 100% is a failure and she's terrified of not being good enough for others to care about or love, so she's very eager to please and help. she's currently fucked up about the idea of missing a year- she was asleep that entire time? what the fuck happened to her during that year? but she's throwing herself into mecha combat to be Useful to people.

1. This is Holly, [profile] madarfoxfire
2. Weeknights up to 12 EST, Friday nights 1 EST, any time Saturday
3. Do the aliens kidnap humans or only kill?
4. I want to play an artist because I haven't done that yet and I want to, expect speeches in the cockpit about self-expression and communication without words. A human is nothing but the desire to be understood by others, wrapped in a shell of meat. (That is the working title of her current project and it is a hideous yet compelling sculpture) (sadly her advisor wouldn't let her use real meat because apparently The Man has no respect for visionaries)
