GODBREAKER

It is the 1999th year of the Divine Age. In this world, humanity has flourished, their ingenuity and technology progressing to the point that the whole world is connected, their cities lighting up the dark side of the planet. However, they are not the rulers of their world. Humanity lives and dies at the mercy of the gods.

Each and every nation is ruled by a god. Life is good, as long as you never set your ambitions above them. Those who doubt the authority of the gods, or try to create independent human nations, are met with divine wrath. When gods feud, it is mortals who suffer and die in their conflict. The fate of humanity is determined in a place where no mortal has ever set foot: Ra-Laira, the City of the Gods. All humans can do in the face of a cruel fate is know their place, and accept their powerlessness.

Or, at least, that's what the gods would like you to believe.

Five humans, forsaken by the cruelty of the gods, drawn together by coincidence, gather at the sight of a fallen star. Rather than a hunk of rock, what they find is a flickering wisp of chromatic flame, looking as if it were ripped out of an oil painting and came to life in the real world. This encounter sets them on the path towards a power great enough to challenge the gods and their indifferent rule over humanity. However, it also paints a target on their backs that none of the thousand gods can ignore.

With the help of an enigmatic, unreliable ally, the humans who would shatter the gods must survive, rise, and overcome every trial laid in their path. They will uncover the secrets of the gods, but that is only the start of a long, perilous journey. If you somehow manage to surpass the gods, there are beings that even they bow to in reverence and fear.

GODBREAKER
A Valor campaign for five players, spanning five seasons. Begin as mortals, awaken a mysterious power to challenge the gods, then continue beyond to discover how insignificant even the gods are in the face of the true horrors of this universe.

Some information about this setting:
  • Primary points of inspiration include Asura's Wrath, Gurren Lagann, and the Cradle book series.
  • Power levels will start high and only get higher. Be prepared for absurd levels of escalation.
  • The tech level of this world is similar to modern day Earth, perhaps a little more advanced, with a popoulation of around 1 billion humans and 1,000 gods.
  • There are roughly a hundred nations in the world. Each one is composed almost entirely of humans, with their own society and governing bodies, but the universal rule is that at the top of every national government stands a god with absolute executive power. The rest of the government handles the cases where the gods don't feel the need to intervene.
  • Most wars are caused by disputes between neighboring gods. If two nations enter open conflict without divine approval, the gods will often intervene to violently punish both sides.
  • Gods can be identified by divine tattoos on their bodies, called crests. Each crest is unique, and grants that god power over a subtly different domain.
  • Angels are constructs of pure divine energy, created as servitors to the gods. The weakest are somewhat stronger than humans, and the strongest can topple cities. Their physical forms vary wildly.
  • Ra-Laira is a beautiful city floating above the ocean, where all the gods who aren't busy ruling nations dwell in luxury. Very little is known about what goes on there, for mortals are never permitted to set foot upon it.
  • The ruler of Ra-Laira is Ra-Vara, God among Gods. She is the most powerful, most revered being on the planet, and all other gods obey her commands without question. She rarely leaves Ra-Laira, but can be recognized by the intricate Crest markings covering every inch of her perfect body.

The party members don't need to know each other in advance, and this game will be a bit less backstory-driven than some of my other campaigns, as you will travel to places where no human has ever set foot before. What will carry the story is your personalities, your bonds with each other, and one shared motivation: A burning desire, be it born of trauma or ideology, to tear the gods from their thrones and make something better. Improve yourself, then improve the world.

This one isn't ready for recruitment yet, so this is mostly just a hype delivery mechanism. Reply with the usual: Questions, comments, character concepts.
